STORIES OF CHANGE

Unity in diversity

Sustainable development of any community is possible only through the active participation of the people in the locality. Mobilised community is an agent of change and they could bring transformation in the community. They know what their felt needs are? How these needs can be met. Such a vibrant community would give priority for the needs of the community. They depend more on internal resources than the external resources. They will have control over their situation. Community decides how to use the external resources for the development of their villages. Such an ideal community is a dream but if people are capacitated, organised then they realise their power. Kripa started its intervention in the Setkhedy village in the year 2012. It was a new village for Kripa. Village has a total population of 1131 people belonging to different social order. People were having the opinion that it is the duty of the Government and Panchayat to bring development in the village. We have nothing to do. People least bothered to participate in the Gram Sabha. Kripa started its intervention by networking with all the stakeholders in the locality. Kripa has visited house to house to get the people for the meeting. Gradually community members started to participate in the meetings convened by Kripa and later stage people took initiative to form community based organisations to organise the people in the village. Staff gave formal and informal training to the community on various topics like different types of CBOs & its functions, leadership and their responsibility, topics related to agriculture and organic farming, government schemes, gram sabha, social issues, micro plan etc. As the implementation of the project went ahead so the participation of the people increased in the implementation of the project.

CBO members have identified local leaders among them who took the responsibility to organise the people in the village. Under the leadership of the local leaders and facilitation of Kripa community members have identified the common issues of their village in the year 2013. 21 March 2013 They have identified issues like scarcity of good drinking water, construction of toilets, CC road and houses under housing scheme, maintenance of road from village to main road, culvert etc. They have prioritized the issues and took decisions to work on these issues. At first they approached the Gram Panchayat with the demand of good drinking water. They submitted an application in the Gram Sabha on14th April 2013.  They participated in the consequent Gram Sabhas expecting solutions for their issues. Later they went to the public hearing of the collector on 27thMay 2014 and there their voice was heard. Officials were given the instruction to find a solution for the problem. After one week 5thJune  2014 PHE officials came to the villages to dig bore wells. There was little confusion but community members solved the confusion and two bore wells were dug in the village. That achievement boosted the confidence of the community members especially the women. Again they approached the Gram Panchayat through Gram Sabha on 2nd October 2014, 26th January 2015, and 14th April 2015 demanding reinforced cement concrete of the road from primary school to village. Panchayat agreed to do the work and later stage panchayat has done the reinforced cement concrete on 24th June 2015. People were very happy. Again there was the problem of good drinking water. They approached the Panchayat on 2nd October 2015. Their demand was not accepted. They gave an application in JanpathPanchayat, PHE and collectorate on 12th January 2016 but unfortunately their application was rejected. People had their meeting on 16thApril 2016 and decided that they will collect Rs. 200 from each family and deepen the existing common open well. They have collected Rs. 9800/- and further support was given by the panchayat to them. Open well was deepened and they received water in the well but that was not enough to solve the problem. Then the core group members have taken the decision to approach the Gram Panchayat with the demand of making reinforced cement concrete of all the roads inside the village. They gave application in the Gram Panchayat on 14th April 2016 and thereafter in the public hearing of collector on 17thMay 2016. Their demand w
